This course reviews OSHA Construction Industry Standards regulating asbestos exposure associated with construction renovation activities such as fireproofing, insulation, floor tiles, roofing shingles and drywalls.

Asbestos, a generic term applied to certain naturally occurring minerals, has historically been used in a wide variety of construction materials due to its high tensile strength, flexibility and resistance to heat, chemicals and electricity. Some materials known to contain asbestos include the following: pipe insulation, sprayed-on fireproofing, floor tiles, cement pipes / sheeting, roofing felts / shingles, drywall and drywall joint compounds and acoustical products.

Exposure to asbestos through inhalation or ingestion of airborne asbestos particles can result in disabling or fatal diseases such as asbestos, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

The OSHA Standard 3096, 2002 Revision, established strict exposure limits and requirements for exposure assessment, medical surveillance, recordkeeping, competent persons, regulated areas, and hazard communications.
