This course provides a review of the laws and regulations applicable to the practice of engineering in the State of Maryland as required by Professional Engineers for license renewal.

The Continued Professional Competency (CPC) requirement enabled by legislation on July 1st, 2010 and became effective on July 11th, 2011, gives the Maryland Board for Professional Engineers the authority to adopt regulations to require continuing professional competency for a licensee as a condition of renewal of a license. The requirement, phased in at a rate of 50%, was initiated on October 1st, 2012 and is summarized below:

  • If a license expires between October 1, 2012 and September 30, 2013, the licensee is required to report 12 PDH units - with a minimum of 9 PDH units in Category A programs, and a maximum of 3 PDH units in Category B programs.

  • If a license expires on or after October 1, 2013, the licensee is required to report 24 PDH units - with a minimum of 18 PDH units in Category A programs, including a minimum of 1 PDH unit in content areas related to the standards of practice or care, laws and regulations applicable to the practice of engineering in Maryland, or professional engineering ethics; and a maximum of 6 PDH units in Category B programs.

The Board regulates the practice of engineering under the following provisions of the Business Occupations and Professions Article, Annotated Code of Maryland, Title 14 and the Code of Maryland Regulations, Title 9, Subtitle 23. This course outlines the provisions associated with Title 14 and the Code of Maryland Regulations as listed below. It additionally satisfies the 1 PDH requirement (from a Maryland approved provider Professional Online Educators, Inc. dba EngineerCE.com) for laws and regulations applicable to the practice of engineering in Maryland prior to a PE’s license renewal:

  • TITLE 14 - PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS
    • SUBTITLE 1: Definitions & General Provisions.
    • SUBTITLE 2: State Board for Professional Engineers.
    • SUBTITLE 3: Licensing.
    • SUBTITLE 4: Miscellaneous Provisions.
    • SUBTITLE 5: Prohibited Acts & Penalties.
    • SUBTITLE 6: Short Title and Termination of Title.

NOTE: This course is specifically prepared for the State of Maryland ONLY. It does NOT fulfill the continuing education requirement for Laws and Rules or Ethics from any other state (i.e. Florida, New Mexico, Ohio, etc).

Course Objectives:

  • Provides a composite description of Title 14 - Business Occupations and Professions, Annotated Code of Maryland as it relates to Professional Engineers.
  • Provides an overview of the Laws and Regulations associated with the State of Maryland Professional Engineers.
