This course provides guidance and information on the properties of using green roofing systems as a practical way to increase the energy performance of buildings and limit stormwater runoff.

Green roofs consist of a layer of vegetation covering the surface of a roof to provide shade, cool indoor and outdoor air temperatures, stormwater management, and increased building thermal performance. The main components of this type of roofing system are waterproofing, soil, and plants. Two types of green roofs exist: extensive and intensive. Extensive green roofs contain shallow soil and low-growing, horizontally spreading plants. Intensive green roofs contain more complex systems with deeper soils and diverse vegetation.

This new technology is especially beneficial for urban area applications, where a large percentage of roofs are made of impervious surfaces that trap heat and contribute to stormwater runoff. Green roofs contribute to energy and water savings goals both directly and indirectly. The shading provided by green roofing systems, reduce heat gains through its surface by nearly 100 percent. The roof’s soil and vegetation layer absorbs and filters rain, preventing it from becoming runoff from the roof’s surface. The photosynthesis process of the plants used in green roofs also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The course will provide a thorough discussion on green roof systems by focusing on energy and water saving mechanisms, identifying potential applications, and providing steps to avoid potential implementation barriers.
