This course discusses the use of HVAC systems and dedicated fans in controlling smoke flow and providing fire safety in a building.

The National Board of Fire Underwriters (NBFU) indicated in its previous fire studies that HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system parts are usually involved whenever a fire occurs. In most fires, HVAC systems either distribute the fire smoke or HVAC parts are combusted during the fire. Accordingly, controlling the spread of fire and smoke in a building has become an important aspect of HVAC system design, installation and operation. The ultimate goal of fire protection is to contain the spread of fire and smoke, whether the fire starts inside an HVAC system or is caused elsewhere.

This course covers comprehensive fire protection options such as fire and smoke dampers, system shut-offs, and special smoke control modes used in the event of a fire.

Course Objectives:

  • Construction Materials
  • Fire and Smoke Dampers
  • Smoke Protection and Compartmentation
  • Dilution, Pressurization, Air flow and Buoyancy
